another buffalo exchange find. twirl-factor based purchase. i wore this vintage Friederike orange one on New Year's Eve (there MAY be photo documentation of the outfit at some point... but for now see my attempt at Ronettes make-up below). ah, the pride of thrifting. unfortunately extremely unoriginal thanks to this shitty economy. i can't wait for people to get rich again so i can have my Goodwill back, all to myself.

I just read Ronnie Spector's autobiography, Be My Baby, so I'm heavily influenced by her right now. On my to do list for this week is to acquire a comb and hairspray so that I can finally get some sort of beehive going. After that I'm going Klute-era Jane Fonda with my hair!

I also finally hired someone to help me understand how to create an image-map, so I should have my website up in a few weeks.

i just went photoshop collage-crazy so i'll post one outfit every day. i picked this dress up at buffalo exchange for $15. i feel like a faerie in it. i pretend i'm wearing rose petals. it has fantastic twirl. this IS an H&M dress (boo!! BORING) that i triumphantly procured at a mere fraction of the original price tag.

i started this painting months ago. it's inspired by RTX. this was way before anyone had any idea they'd change their name to Black Bananas! YEP. creepy coincidences abound--hath re-inspired me to continue onward. i have since darkened the banana and detailed the peyote plants and painted the skulls. much more intricate detailing to come. but for now i thought i'd share the beginning with y'all:

I'm starting to feel that this is a square format piece. i think i'll still paint it like it's not and later end up cropping it. i'm brainstorming about a background. i want something very simple or perhaps nothing at all. my brainstorming reminded me of this piece i did as part of a triad of Emily back in freshman or sophomore year at MassArt.

not wanting to paint bigger than 9"x11" hasn't changed a bit, but i HAVE since figured out how to not completely muddy a good face...
i'm looking at these types of high horizon photos for a guide on possible backgrounds. i'm attracted to yellow or cerulean washes. maybe a tree line, i don't know yet. maybe just shadows of palms--against the "sunlight." for a very Southern Californian feel. feel free to inputtt put

for any of you who may have dreamed of owning a piece of mine, i just set up an etsy shop yesterday! it's a still a pink infant raisin, and will probably go through many changes, but i threw together a banner and am working on adding personal touches here and there. For now there's only 1 piece for sale--the Gogol Bordello portrait I did nearly 2 years ago for the Far West Almanac, but Wednesday you can expect 2 more pieces.
i'm pretty excited about this!
To set up a shop Etsy runs a $1.01 credit card/bank account check thing, charges $0.20 per listing and takes a 3.5% sales fee. I chose Etsy over Ebay because Ebay stresses me out! I like the community on Etsy.

Owls are associated with medicine of sorcery, magical transformation, link between the dark, unseen world and the world of light, communication between spiritual & physical realms, comfort w/the shadow self. they're pulling the girl's hair, guiding her further down the path she has chosen to take.
Because snakes shed their skin, they are a powerful symbol for discarding old ways and transforming the negative into the positive. She's leading the way, the snake is in her reigns.

i'm not much one for choreographed dancing. i've done it, quit it, and failed at it when my memory started going around my 16th birthday. i'm somewhat impressed by it, usually bored by it, and overcome with disturbing thoughts that mass synchronicity could strip my mind of creativity.
sure, i watch old episodes of Hullabaloo, or Hollywood A Go-Go (Gazzarri girls) looking for tidbits of inspiration, but the dancers that really move me are on Soul Train or independently contracted go-go girls. So that's why i've never explored the "Pan's People" group. Because the founder, Flick Colby, just died, i've watched a few videos of Pan's People performing.
Here's my favourite so far:

What I don't like about choreography is the ACTING aspect. I don't think lyrics should be the driving force in how to move your body. I've never had a penchant for singers, and I think singers and their lyrics are the most easily accessible aspect of music--the extent of the "simple-man's" grasp of music. I'm most interested in rhythm, but possess an ingrained partiality for melody thanks to Jimi Hendrix as the most intense influence on my personal musical upbringing. A sense of rhythm is by far the most important in dance. I'm interested in dancers who are acutely aware of their body and can isolate movements, anticipate changes in the music, and have the ability to interact with the music in terms of time signature, have a sense of playfulness, and ultimately aren't dancing for anyone or anything but their own shear enjoyment.
in other words, i'm really fuckin' picky.

i mainly watch other dancers for hand and foot movements. hand positions and what to do with your arms is a long, hard road of experimenting and comfortableness. i've always concentrated primarily on working from my abdomen out, and generally believe you should keep the majority of movement close to your body because bigger movements should be reserved for only the most dramatic situations.
Here's some of Flick's advice (taken directly from this post made by Miss. Peelpants:
"When you're dancing, bypass your head, by-pass your mind and dance from your middle. The minute you start to concentrate on the effect you are making, you are not 'sent'. You look uptight and stiff."
"It's essential to know what you look like," she says. "Once you know exactly what happens — when you move your arm in a particular movement, you will feel more confident. You can't make a fool of yourself."
"Wear as little as possible. Remember it's hot dancing. If you've got good legs, wear a short, short skirt; if you've got a good midriff, wear it bare. Make the most of what you've got and wear something that flatters you. Fringes on things will accentuate your movement, and so will a belt with a big buckle hung on the hips. Don't wear something dark; try to swing in something light, or sequined, so you show up and don't just melt into the shadows. Shoes with a clumpy heel are good, but boots support your ankles. Listen to lots of pop. It helps if you know a record. You're prepared. You know what's going to happen next. You can relax land enjoy it." Above all, Flick says, "Don't fling your arms around. Keep it neat and tidy. Keep it close. You want to look good, not pretentious."

Yes, the final finals to become postcards and posters. this project was right in my comfort zone. 60's poster art was my first and still is the strongest inspiration in my artwork. i'm excited for similar future opportunities! climbing back into the swing.
these have also served as great exercises in "letting go." i don't know about abolishing perfectionism, but now i know how nice it feels to JUST FUCKIN DO IT ALREADY. and i think the less uptight approach is visually evident in my figures.

super stoked on managing to acquire photoshop today on ma new mac.
i'm working on my website, i have it hosted with godaddy, where i got my domain name, and am using wordpress.org to host it(?). anyway, i'm totally overwhelmed with php/css/html/mysql!!!??! what i'm gathering so far is that php is what wordpress.org uses and i only have a very elementary understanding of html, so i'm pathetically trying to marry them (like using wordpress to upload a photo and then using html to attempt to make an image map) and it's not working. maybe my main problem is that i don't understand how (or where) the wordpress.org website can access the files in the server. i know how to upload/download from a server and have it all connected, but i don't know where to find certain things i've uploaded to the server through the website. whew. not ONLY that, but i really don't want a blog at all (or maybe just link to my old stardustfuzz one), and therefore am going to have figure out how to create templates from scratch... in php. i DO feel like if i conquer this, the knowledge i will have accumulated will be monetarily compensated in the future.

LA is weird. I'm much happier to be a resident of Long Beach, even though it's still technically LA.

i've been working on a slacker psychedelic DJ to collaborate with me, so that I can "officially" dance at his DJ gigs, I don't think he's serious enough, or maybe it's just a slow process.
i feel like i'm amassing this enormous amount of inspiration, like i've been studying other people's ways to creative fame and fortune. there are so many creative avenues that interest me, i get lost in re-hashing them and trying to find a way to spearhead a profitable PRODUCT.

i want to be a mermaid in seafoam green i want my hair to bleach until it’s nearly translucent. i want my eyelashes so light and thick that if i close my eyes your depth perception gets fucked. i want to feel good slipping into the cold and murky tirade of our moon’s patterns, i want to wash my heart, sun myself on slick rocks. i want to be half mermaid and half oranges-eating changeling. if i am a changeling then my energy and efforts and the lack of requital makes sense. then also i will have some invisible armor, woven from myth and vague playful memories. i can choose to be hard with justification because i am something that must be protected, something that must be respected, must be loved unconditionally, madly, like a poison. i am dangerous. i will be a sick siren, a scream so high-pitched that it will relentlessly vibrate against your insides, i will slowly chew and then spew venom that eats at your thickest fibers, i will be the ever-promise of eternal magic that you let go, whose spirit you destroyed almost completely (you will secretly know i have recovered ten-fold and now blossom in the freedom of my half-existence). i will be the thing you almost caught, almost tamed, almost forgot, and then lost.

i will move to my own fairytale cottage and i will get a sewing machine and hole myself up away from all the vampires. i will have a garden of herbs, fennel and basil and cilantro, lavender, and lime and orange and lemon trees,

progress on the sketch for serena's tattoo i'm finally getting on my ass to do (because i get off my ass to do everything and anything else). her phone call pushed me to get started and lack of friends and excess of loneliness pushed me to continue. I hope to finish this by the end of the week.
the visual idea is a fantastical archaic buffalo, a new mythological buffalo creature with scales and feathers.
it's helpful to see my sketch on the screen because it objectively shows me where there are problems. when i revisit this sketch i will skew the scales in a way that suggests the form of his body, move the right eye down a bit because his head is slightly tilted, and even out the horn size. everything else is going to evolve naturally.

in a (probably superficial) sense it's coincidentally appropriate that i'm beginning to reread Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee. maybe vicariously some vein of depth of connection with this land i cannot wholly rightfully claim, yet still feel, will grace this creation process.

In other news, the footage from Farflung/OGOD's Jodorowsky Bacchanal I danced at will not be released because there were camera issues. I'm still on the lookout for other footage but have yet to find any. I have been asked to dance in a studio video for them and all/any of their future gigs, so after they return from their European tour, you'll get lots more visual goodies of my liquid electric go-go!

i was invited by Farflung, a Hawkwind-esque space rock acideater group i met 2 Fourth of Julys ago at a Teepee Records party entitled New Weird America Music or something of that nature. I told them i wanted to do Barbarella go-go for them and they took me up on it last weekend!
The following pictures were taken by Shazzula, the radass witchbaby frontwoman of Aqua Nebula Oscillator, a dark psychedelic group from France who I met in Holland and invited me to Corsica (wetting my imagination's tongue with daydreams of riding horses into the ocean and slipping off backwards into the seas of the Meditteranean, forgotten cliff-edge stone palaces, and indulgent, exotic bird midnights with bottles of whisky and candle-lit gloomy pools.
way back then we spoke about go-go and sewing your own outfits and smushing yourself into festivals.
we're like stranger sisters, far-out peddlers of our own psychedelia realities, dark and light and all between.

i got in a car accident 10 minutes away from seeing ZZ Top LIVE! In Concert! Head-on with the airbag punching me in the face. my ankle twisted in my cowboy boots, sprained. the car filled with smoke so fast and i didn't want to open my eyes because they burned so hard i thought they'd fall out of my head. trying to find the door handle but realize i can't even stand up.
i went to the ER in an ambulance and i was crying and the guy asked me what was wrong and i told him i could be seeing ZZ Top right now. he told me no, what hurt with my body.
i had this "vision" dream which i decided i would draw in my sketchbook, blow up really big onto watercolour paper and do a fucking bigass painting. it was about the accident but also really weird cuz, you know, it was a dream. i stopped working on it the second i could hobble around enough to distract myself from sitting in place for 8 hours a day.

yeah my right eye was essentially glued shut from the swelling and the cuts/raw skin for 3 days. now i'm having floaters in my vision, which sucks.

the figures in my head have always freaked me out, this is the first time I accepted the weirdness that came out naturally and it felt really good and i think i might enjoy drawing if i could let go all the time instead of trying to conform to the more realistic way of figurative drawing, there's always been something just a little off about my figures anyway, when I rely too heavily on reference. I'm excited
ALSO, I walked into DicE magazine's offices yesterday morning and told them I thought my art was right on with what they were doing, showed them my portfolio, and when I got home around 5 and checked my e-mail, I saw that they'd written me one only minutes after I'd left their office! Esther Pearl Watson paints UFOs being interacted with in vaguely Texan town settings and she is my favourite artist in a while. I just found her stuff 5 minutes ago.

Yesterday was my first day working for South Paradiso Leather. I can't wait until I can officially say I'm an artist for them, because it would be such an honor. I had this absolute daydream work day where it felt like meditating, listening to so much new music, in this fairytale Japanese cottage in Laurel Canyon up all these cracked stone walkways, over a little wooden bridge. It felt like a treehouse, or definitely built with gnomes in mind. Everything wooden, like a cabin, big windows, windows everywhere in the middle of this natural oasis but with this insane view of the Los Angeles metropolis. I was treated to a performance of a Victrola Credenza, one song one side, one side one needle -- a 20's dance one and a dirty Bessie Smith. I got a beef burrito from Baja Fresh and practiced painting on leather by doing belts. It's definitely a new technique and I'm a little nervous, because with whatever I do, I need to be the best.
Romulus (the mastermind creator of the South Paradiso reality) spouted some RADASS off the wall t-shirt designs into my ear for me to sketch, I wish I could share them with you because your jaw would smack through yer floorboards and you'd snort belief out of your left nostril at lightspeed, but I pinky-swore him (my highest swear) I wouldn't divulge anything. I've probably already said to much.

I don't like Snow's photographs as much as I like Nan Goldin's, and I can't tell you why I'm attracted to this sort of imagery. It's so incredibly dark. I guess maybe it's the honesty in them; because you can't reproduce that kind of stuff in a studio. I can relate to the obsession with death that comes across in them so strongly.

I'm working on sketches for a cd cover/booklet, and finishing the split stitch outlines for "WITCH BABY" on the back of my jacket.

Honestly, I've been pre-occupied with survival and it's left me totally dry. I don't have the energy to make art. I haven't found that balance yet, and it's kind of destroying me little by little. If I'm not concentrating on survival, then I'm practicing the art of ESCAPISM. Emotional energy is at an all time low over here, the capacity has been reached.

In 10 days I'm moving out of my daydream place. I have no idea what's going to happen. I'm looking for live-in nanny positions. If I can just make a few hundred bucks I'm going to go on the road and hitchhike.

'cause when you ain't got nothing, you ain't got nothing to lose. And that's the point I'm at.

I have a little less than $40 left to my name.

In many ways, I feel like I don't know what else is left to push for. I have a really long list of goals, but I feel kind of done.

I know I have a lot of talents all over the board and it will probably take many more years to figure out my niche. Life is kind of daunting, and I'm not so sure I'm figuring out the rules of the game fast enough.

This is a practice painting for what may become the best thing that's ever happened to me art-wise. This is with leather acrylics.

The canvas is 4"x6"

The "assignment" was to do an Hawaiian landscape with a waterfall. This is the piece in progress, maybe 70%, maybe 80%. I need some objective help with this as far as technique is concerned. Any other critique is also highly appreciated.

The opportunity is to paint panels on leather that are then sewn into leather jackets. I'm talking real rock and roller clothing. South Paradiso.

You can see an example of how my work would be integrated into the clothing if you click on "jackets" and then hover over "window of the sun."

To have found a way my work can be functional and time-based, worn around, and on the bodies of the people I love... I mean, THAT'S where it's at for me.

met a gallery owner and promised to send her pictures of my work to potentially sell in the gallery shop. thinking those matchbox altars
i'm so inspired artistically here, my room has some furniture in it (which is nice because I wasn't able to bring more than what would fit into half of a trunk in a car) and there's a desk right under the window that looks out to all the different levels of garden. It's a perfect new studio.
The only bummer right now is that I was forced to leave my stereo system behind and I don't even have speakers to hook up to my computer.
I also found a bike and I'm having the brakes fixed and a basket attached and they're calling me tomorrow. Should be around $85 for that.
I opened a CA bank account.
I went grocery shopping.

There's a SHIT TON more that's happened but it's not art related.

If you haven't noticed, deep inside the layers of current subcultures, there's a building fascination and re-examination of magic. It's abstract and yet so specific. We've got necklaces of crystals--no longer middle-aged lady new age crisis pendants, but fuckin' hip shiit.

We've got this universal/collective conscious for animal prints, faux and real fur, teeth necklaces, pussywillow earrings, leather clothes, feathers everywhere

the re-emergence of motorcycles as vehicles to get at freedom.

there's a lot of symbolism going around. And what about the newest psych rock music movement... that's a real general term but for the sake of convenience... I think it's because of the time we live in. When we live in the craziest of times and mass society's eating their own shit and thinking it tastes like sugar we've lost control. so here's the undercurrent, the ones who DRIVE society, saying all right you don't want to give us anything but we don't want your sugarshit anyway and we're gonna take power this other way.

So we dream real hard

get out of this reality best we can and create our own. think on transcendental experiences

the expression of getting back to our mystical spiritual (pagan, really. not that i think of it that way) roots

but those universal symbols across time that have always represented the same concepts are coming in pretty fast, have been in place for a while.

The West, cowboys, wild horses, hard drinking, grass smoking, vintage cars that will transport you into a different time, the same diners with tiles and booths and counters and jukeboxes, vinyl records... it just goes on.
